Behold, PatBateman’s work-from-home station!
It’s official: for the foreseeable future, my company has banned all employees who can work remotely from coming into the office. I am not happy.
Some people might really like working from home. They enjoy the freedom of going wherever they want, whenever they want, and still being connected. Not me. Nope. I have three children who are now home from school for who knows how long, cooped up in the house getting cabin fever, and a stock market that’s being currently slaughtered (my clients are okay). That means I’m going to be talking with Mrs. Millionaire on the phone explaining her asset allocation/financial outlook to her while my kids will be arguing about which Netflix show to watch next in the background. And yes, they most certainly will be arguing.
We had an office in the house; we chose to turn it into a TV room. I believe that was a horrible decision now.
But hooray I can sit in my dining room while wearing flip flops and work at the same time.
Stupid ‘Rona.

How are your clients doing okay? Unless you mean their net worth are large enough it doesn’t matter to them.
How is it that
you have hand sanitizer and wipes?! You probably have toilet paper too.

Their investment portfolios are designed to be able to take this kind of surprise volatility and not be down nearly as much as the stock market.
We have five more of those large Lysol wipes containers in the garage, a couple more containers of Purell, and plenty of TP to last us another month without restocking. Reason: I was a Boy Scout.

I’m working from home and it is a nightmare. I’m glad to have a job(s), but I’d rather school been postponed and extended out so I could go camp in the desert until this thing is over.

Ideal: remote fishing cabin with an office (and internet connections) that we could bug out to in times like this. I need to put that in my five year plan.

Might become the norm. The problem with my situation is the kids have a hard time following instruction when I’m sitting in front of them telling them what ti do twenty times. Now they have to figure out how to use a whole new platform. I hate half assing things, and this is all so half assed, in every aspect. I also have two kids home who are also doing school remotely, and yes, the fighting.
I’d live to email a few parents and tell them I’ll take their kids out into the wilderness until this thing is done if they pay my salary for the rest of the year, plus a bit of cushion for when I get fired.

I’m working from home 3 days a week (until the lock down inevitably happens) and right now the only difference is the 45 minute drive when I go in. Either way I’m sitting by myself. My wife’s office is still requiring them to come in every day while our office has everybody else working from home full time so there’s nobody to talk to either way.

So this then.

I shaved 2 hours off my daily commute, and I wake up at 8 now instead of 5. My dual monitor setup is put to good use now... so I ain’t complaining.
I do see a common theme amongst my coworkers that those who have kids at home hate it, since going to the office
is kind of an escape for them.

You should sell some of that. That stuff is worth it’s weight in gold. Stores near me are expecting to be out of stock for a few months.

You aren’t alone. I’ve got a 5 year old, 3 year old, and 1 year old at home. Their normal activities outside the house (e.g.: swimming lessons, going to the nearby family center, etc.) have all been postponed. They’ve been cooped up a bit too long, and are getting on each other. It’s not fun, trying to be productive on a remote work meeting when you’ve got screaming kids in the background.

Godspeed with that age spread. I’ve only got a nine and seven year old. I have a long driveway and neighbor kids, and can kick them all out front if it gets bad.
I’m also in grad school, where my success partially hinges on finding a stable schedule so I can study and research. That’s all gone down the shitter. Thankfully I aced all my midterms to lift a bit of pressure.

That’s a great way to get cited for price gouging.

Same but only one kid. I have an office area but she pretty much took it over.
All my childless co-workers were dying for this and I’m on a different page.

As a teacher, I can assure you that there won’t be any returning to school before the end of this year (distance learning until Thanksgiving could be a thing depending on how the next month plays out).

My wife went in three days this week and said she really likes it because there are only two other people on her floor that she never sees and she can really get lots of work done.
As for kids in the background, I imagine most folks would understand the situation.

Nah. I’ll hang onto it. Everyone should have enough and just a bit more; not a garage full of the shit.

Yeah, my wife is still going into the office every day. So it’s just me, the kids, and my iPad streaming red stock tickers.
At least you have silence.

Are you ready to hear something fucked up? I mean, like HORRIBLY fucked up?! I wake up every day at 4am to go to the gym or to jog. I’ve been doing it because that’s the only time I have to do it. But now that I could get up later since I don’t have to get my kids up at 6 AM to get ready for school, I don’t.
I still get up at 4.

Shorts? If there were no kids in the house, I’d consider that as overdressed for that scenario.

And the ability to play music as loud as I like. That’s a real plus.

Yeah... I kinda still “wake up” at 5 as well, I just roll back to sleep for a bit more. Bio clocks.
